TIPS TO TAKE ACTION AFTER THE WEBCAST

  1. Consider making a list of topics you want to speak to your family about in connection to the future of your sibling. Start having the conversation, to express both worries and hope. 

  2. Think about getting matched one-on-one with another sibling, to share experiences. Talk to someone else “who gets it.” Learn more here: Peer Mentoring  

  3. Schedule a time with family members to discuss what services and supports your sibling is receiving now (finances, contacts, etc.). Frame the discussion in small, manageable pieces.  

  4. Explore Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT) to better deal with the variety of complicated feelings that come with being a sibling.

Siblings Canada  

Siblings Canada and the  Canadian Centre for Caregiving Excellence (CCCE) share a vision of a Canada where all caregivers, including siblings are valued and supported. Visit Siblings Canada to learn more. 

Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT)

This workshop is designed to help siblings manage difficult feelings and events in their lives., in a loving and respectful way, and to better deal with the reality of having a sibling with an intellectual disability or with autism.

This eight-part podcast series shines a spotlight on the unseen realities of caregivers and care providers across Canada.  
  
Peer Mentoring Program  

Siblings Canada' Peer Mentoring program is a free program that matches adults one-on-one with someone else who has a sibling with a disability, with the hope deep sense of understanding which comes from having similar lived experiences.  Sign up for the Siblings Canada Newsletter for updates.

Financial Planning for the Future 
Partners for Planning has extensive resources listed on the Planning Network to assist families with many aspects of disability related financial planning. 

The RDSP is a made-in-Canada innovation designed to provide a long-term savings vehicle for people with disabilities. 
 
The Disability Tax Credit
The DTC is a non-refundable tax credit.  It helps people with a disability, or those who support them, to reduce the amount of income tax they have to pay.  
 
The ODSP is a social assistance program that provides a monthly income and medical assistance for people with a disability in Ontario.
 
This program is designed to support people in Ontario with a developmental disability over 18 years of age and who need support to fully participate in their community. 
 
The Henson Trust, also known as a discretionary trust, is structured to protect the assets of a person living with a disability, as well as their right to collect government benefits and entitlements such as The Ontario Disability Support Program.

Microboards Ontario 
Some families are exploring Microboards as a solution to lifelong planning and support for a person with developmental disabilities. Visit the Microboards Ontario website to learn more.

Ontario Caregivers Organization 
The Ontario Caregivers Organization (OCO) exists to support caregivers across Ontario. OCO offers resources and supports for all types of caregivers.
